Slow MySQL queries

    I’m running a popular blog with 16k posts and 300k comments. Even though I’m using a serious dedicated external MySQL server I would notice periods of slow down. I traced it to widgets that do inefficient MySQL calls.

    In particular – the calendars and archives widget were particularly bad. I was wondering if anyone else has looked into making the MySQL efficient or if perhaps I’m missing something.
