I put some PDF (10) on a single page, choosing the Thumbnail+Lightbox view, but they appear very slowly. Tha page loads, but the thumbnails appear 6-7 seconds later.
Can I speed up the thumbnail loading?

Use an image as the book thumbnail.

Same problem here. I used a compressed image as the thumbnail, while the balance of pages are compressed images too. But the thumbnail loads exactly six seconds later, which is not a usable solution by any stretch. I then searched and found this support post to see if a solution exists.

The website customers deems the plugin defective less some way to fix the crazy slow load time. We can’t consider paying PRO for something that fundamentally doesn’t work right.

The following is a link to the 12 page brochure, where each image is saved at 60 value which is high compression. The short code is added to a widget.

    Installation and Server Details:
    Wordpress 5.0.3
    PHP Time Limit: 200
    Wordpress Memory: 256 MB
    PHP Version: 7.2.14
    MySQL Version: 5.6.41

At minimum, the place the shortcode is added should load a user definable color box (default to white) H x W to the size of the thumbnail image applied, with an animated rotating loader in the center to let users know their is still content loading. This would be a professional looking solution at minimum.

Have you ever considered the 1kb minified Echo.js as a lazy loader to speed up content? It seems the content delay is the Javascript used.

I tried replacing the tumbnail generated by the plugin with images as suggested, but the slowness is still there:
