Slow loading (depending on web browser and location)

  • I’m having a problem with my WP installation that has me completely stumped.

    Up until about 5 minutes ago, I thought I was having some sort of plugin problem or pinging something or ??? Now I’m not sure.

    Here’s the problem:
    When I access my WP from off campus using Omniweb (my preferred browser), I get a 10 second or so pause before anything happens. Using Firefox results in immediate loading on the same connection. This pause only happens in WP, the other static html content on the server loads at the same speed on both machines. Also, in both cases, processor and disk usages looks to be about the same.

    Now for the confusing issues… when I’m on the same subnet as the server, both browsers load instantly.

    Confusing issue #2… windows machines using firefox on the local subnet experience the same delay. There’s no delay with IE though.

    Does anyone have any idea of what might be going on?

    I’m using WP 1.2.2 on a gentoo linux box with mySQL. Just in case that matters.

    @macmanx

    Well, your images are taking longer than they should to load as well, so I think it’s a server problem.

    macmanx, it looks like you were right. I was just playing with my apache settings and suddenly there’s not delay at all. It looks like it was a problem with RFC1413 lookups. I turned them off and now everything is lightning quick even though there’s a huge compile going on that’s using 99% of the cpu.

    thanks for the help.
