@substitute,
Here’s a smart tip for all performance related issues on a WP blog:
1) Put blog in Maintenance Mod.
2) Deactivate all plugins
3) Test
4) If performance now OK then activate plugins one by one and test for culprit.
5) Once you have identified culprit disable maintenance mode.
6) Investigate alternatives for rogue plugin or contact author.
You will find that most performance issues on WP are as a direct result of a plugin consuming too many CPU cycles or performing excessive SQL quesries.
Let us know how you go.

Great Thanks!
I’ve just done that and removed the culprits 🙂 It’s much better, I didn’t know about the maintenance mode! Great Tip!
You may wonder how I did it so fast? I started with the least essential plugins, and saw a dramatic improvement right away!
So I ‘ll keep the essential that’s enough!
Thanks again!

I just installed 2.9.1 on a brand new blog and it is extremely slow with NO themes or plugins. There has to be something more to it. I cannot even setup the basic parameters without timing out. 2.8 and 2.9 were not anywhere near this slow
where do you activate maintenance mod?
I cant even get to login area.
