Why it’s needed, I don’t know. Why not just allow us to put the site into an Editor mode, where we can select the header, menu, footer etc. directly? Seems slow to load, and it emphasises a major problem with Gutenberg/the block editor, in that it is impossible to be sure what you are editing. When editing, we really need to be able to see the edges of the blocks, or at least be able to toggle them on and off. Just trying to edit the footer is frustrating. Dealing with columns and nested blocks is impossible. Ok, I’ve figured the first issue out, but it still feels really clunky. After clicking the header, footer etc. I have to move my mouse to the bottom of the page to click ‘Edit template’. It would be so much more user-friendly if it just displayed a message at the top of the screen, stating I was editing the header (or whatever) template. Also, clicking ‘Edit template’ navigates away from the page I was originally editing. As for the issue regarding the outline of the blocks, yes I can see the block outline if I click on it, but there really needs to be an option to toggle the visibility of all block bounding boxes while editing. If I understood correctly, basically show the template part that you’re editing, right? * Have you tried using the List View? That’s your preference. Being able to see the outlines, or at least toggle them, would help me.
