I have been told that my site is inceeeedibly slow… I’m running WordPress 2.5, I don’t host it myself… you can see it here. Any way I can speed it up – or can you check it out to see if you find it slow?
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Yep, it’s definitely got a long lag prior to loading.
1) try caching your site (if you aren’t already)
It will run a test and offer ways to improve performance.
Thanks for your suggestion – will check that site out – ok, dumb question… how do I run that first option you suggested?
It’s hosted in Hong Kong which basically ensures high latency to the rest of the world, as well as very likely being on a highly oversold and under-resourced server.
You can see how long it’s taking your queries to execute, by putting the following at the end of your footer template.
<?php echo get_num_queries(); ?> queries generated in <?php timer_stop(1); ?> seconds.
that’ll help determine if a) you have a crazy number of queries, and b) if they’re being executed in a timely fashion or not.
Chances are, what you really need to do is change hosting providers.
Several ways. WordPress has a default one, and there are some good plugins. I use WP Cache.
Thanks Ivovic for your help… I think I might enquire with my host – as they had the option of hosting with Hong Kong or one in the US. They suggested the Hong Kong option. But thanks so muc for that – really appreciate understanding it a bit more 🙂
Thanks dacoatne for the advice also, will get that part of it sorted! haha
Thanks guys! You’re awesome 😉 Will try the cache part via wordpress and see if that helps a little at least.
I suppose they would suggest the HK option, since that’s no doubt the cheapest for them… 😉
If you’re in NZ, you should look into some aussie hosting – or US hosting, but certainly not anything in asia. To get to asia from NZ you usually have to go via the USA, unless you’re with an ISP that specialises in asian-based traffic, like Australia’s Internode.
the UK has pretty good access direct to asia – that’s not really the case from Australia/New Zealand.
hmm funny how it loads fast for some and not others. I still might check out if they can move it to the US server. I’m sure that can be done, right?
Cheers everyone for your help and letting me know the result 🙂
“hmm funny how it loads fast for some and not others”
It’s not really funny or strange or anything like that – they’re in different parts of the world to you, it’s to be expected.
These days the internet ‘just works’ so people dont really think about how far their information has to travel, and who runs these networks along the way and how congested they are… and which path they use to get there, etc.
You and I use about 9,000km more cable to access your website than Haochi does.
Just emailed my host – they are going to change it to the US server in the next few hours! I have to admit… that is great service.
so thanks Ivovic for helping me understand that 🙂 Where are you from?
I’m in Melbourne Australia.
Glad they’re helping you out. You should definitely notice an improvement with the relocation, of course it would be far more dramatic if you hosted in NZ or Aus, but also 5 times the price 🙂
That’s a nice tool Dacoatne! I ran one of my WP through it and a nice suggestion is made:
To give your users feedback, consider layering your page or using positioning to display useful content within the first two seconds.
How would I do that…? The posts appear before the sidebar, which is good I guess, is that what is suggested or can I do more?
Ivovic, ah yes, Melbourne is an awesome place I hear. We’ve been thinking bout relocating over to there – huge music scene, much better than here 😉
The reason I don’t host it here in NZ or Aussie (asides from the price! haha) is because once promotion starts, we’ll be focussing on the US. But yeah, they are a good host and have had no problems with them at al – they answer any queries i have within minutes! But yes, they have migrated my site to the US server. All done – is it any faster for you? Would you mind checking?
