I just set my page up with a sliding featured post area. I like the way it looks but it is slow to load images. Is this a wordpress problem or do I need to contact the theme company?

It looks like your theme is poorly implementing the slider and the way it loads the css.

To achieve faster rendering it’s better to put all the css before loading any of the javascript but your theme first loads all the plugin css ( it’s best to load this after the theme css ) then all the javascript followed by the theme default css then a custom css file followed by the inline css stored in the theme options.

    From Page Speed:

    Combine external CSS (13)
There are multiple resources served from same domain. Consider combining them into as few files as possible.
    13 CSS resources served from
Optimize the order of styles and scripts (7)
The following external CSS files were included after an external JavaScript file in the document head. To ensure CSS files are downloaded in parallel, always include external CSS before external JavaScript.
2 inline script blocks were found in the head between an external CSS file and another resource. To allow parallel downloading, move the inline script before the external CSS file, or after the next resource.

Once the browser cache is primed your slider loads much faster.

Chris, thank you so much for trying to help, but I have absolutely no idea what you just said. That I have gotten this blog up and kind of running at all is the equivalent to early man creating fire. Thanks for the notes though. I will try and find some 20 something computer person to walk me through it.
