Support » Plugins » skin or theme switcher?

  • Resolved photocurio

I sure would like to be able to let users change the look of my site, like Jeremy Keith’s site (I’ve emailed Keith, no response). There is a theme switcher plugin, but it is not persistent–as soon as a user hits a link, you are back to the original theme. I assume this is because Keith’s site puts a cookie on your machine.

  • Jeremy Keith’s site is not built on WordPress, but I’m using this plugin right now on two 3.1 sites. Working very, very well for me so far, and the sidebar widget allows you to select a list or a drop-down menu.

Hey thanks, I don’t know how I missed that.

    You’re welcome.

When I switch themes it loses all widgets from the sidebar.

Dramatic differences in theme layouts can cause those issues. Most notably, the number of sidebars/widget areas, and their locations in individual themes. You can try going to the widgets page as admin after switching to a theme and dragging the widgets to the sidebar, then see if wordpress will remember their locations when switching themes as a user.

The themes I use in the switcher all use the same sidebar/widget layout to preserve my basic site structure, while still allowing a change in visual presentation that suits the user. Some compromise may be required.
