[Resolved] skin or theme switcher?

  • I sure would like to be able to let users change the look of my site, like Jeremy Keith’s site (I’ve emailed Keith, no response). There is a theme switcher plugin, but it is not persistent–as soon as a user hits a link, you are back to the original theme. I assume this is because Keith’s site puts a cookie on your machine.

  • Jeremy Keith’s site is not built on WordPress, but I’m using this plugin right now on two 3.1 sites. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-switcher/ Working very, very well for me so far, and the sidebar widget allows you to select a list or a drop-down menu.

Hey thanks, I don’t know how I missed that.

    You’re welcome.

When I switch themes it loses all widgets from the sidebar.

Dramatic differences in theme layouts can cause those issues. Most notably, the number of sidebars/widget areas, and their locations in individual themes. You can try going to the widgets page as admin after switching to a theme and dragging the widgets to the sidebar, then see if wordpress will remember their locations when switching themes as a user.

The themes I use in the switcher all use the same sidebar/widget layout to preserve my basic site structure, while still allowing a change in visual presentation that suits the user. Some compromise may be required.
