sizing images to fit column width

  • Just wondering if there is a way to have WordPress automatically size photos fit the content column width .
I notice that when I insert an image there is this code, for example
    [caption id="attachment_33" align="alignnone" width="550" caption="Nearing Spring"]<img class=”size-full wp-image-33 ” title=”p10202172″ src=”http://www.tomsemmes.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/p10202172.jpg” alt=”Nearing Spring” width=”550″ />[/caption]

seems that I could work with the style of “size-full” in the CSS sheet. Any ideas?
I tried using the style ‘max-width’ but it made every photo size to fit the column whereas I want some images to be smaller thumbnails.
