I update to Version 2.13.12.1 a last week. My database was 96 MB on October 21 backup. It swelled to 200 MB on October 28 backup.

    What could possibly explain this?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Doesn’t sound possible; info on backup state can only take a few KB. Try this – http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-optimize/ – as a plugin which can show you the size of your individual database tables.

I know it’s odd. But here is a pic of the two db files and the dates.

I just installed the wp optimize. It shows the size of my database

The smaller size db from the Oct 21 backup is expected. I have been deleting a lot of media files. This is what made me notice the irregularity. I wanted to back up the new, cleaned up database.

I have been deleting content, but when I back up the db has doubled? Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Can you show the screenshot showing the size of each table in WP-Optimize? (Not just the grand total).

    David

Not sure how to do that. I have 132 tables. Thanks.

Well, it’s probably best to just read the sizes manually, and then you’ll see which are the big ones. That’ll then show you what the data in your database is.

Thanks. Can you be certain this would not occur because of the update. I just have no earthly idea how the size of my db, backed up by Updraft would double in size.

I admit, I am not a techy person. I did contact my dev on this and he said..

“I took a look at the database and cleaned a few things up but when I did an UpDraft backup the file was still huge. When I did a manual DB backup in your cPanel it was much smaller. Not sure if UpDraft is adding more info into the backup…”

I guess I should have mentioned this earlier. Sorry! But the point is, I am backing up the same thing, one week apart, the same way with the same plugin and seeing my db double in size. This, after the latest update.

Meanwhile, my dev and the wp-optimize plugin show the db being the expected size.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

A 200MB backup from an 880MB database does not indicate any problem with the backup. You would not expect a smaller backup than that from that size of database. (The backup is smaller than the database because the backup uses compression; so, in this case it’s achieving 77% compression, which is in the normal range). I can confirm that there has been no alteration to the UpdraftPlus database backup code for a long time (and definitely not in any recent release).

P.S. The backup is just a standard compressed SQL file. You can use any suitable tool (e.g. WinZip) to remove the compression, and then read it in a text editor (on a machine with a decent amount of RAM, of course, especially if it is an editor that loads it all into RAM at once).
