    Hi,

I wanted to backup my page with my ftp-program. The download at some stage stopped with an error, I unfortunately did not copy, so I don´t know it exactly. It was something like “couldn´t find file XY”

Since then, my installation is now broke. I can log in to wp-admin and all pages and posts are there, but when I view my page, I see only the firstpage. Clicking on any link or wanting to preview a page or a post from wp-admin leeds to: “Not found – the requested URL XY was not found on this server.

Can anyone imagine, what this file was, that could not be copied and somehow is gone now ? Perhaps some kind of pointer file to where the context is located or something like this.

Ok, I know, what file it was… it couldn´t find “flickr-cache”, so I guess that has nothing to do with my vanished site ?

    oh… my site is http://www.visioton.de

FTP application does not remove files on the host when you copy them. You may, however, select move instead of copy and it removes the files from the server.

Another reason for this is missing or corrupted .htaccess file – when the mod_rewrite rule is broken, the site may behave as you described.

You can reinstall WordPress on your site, upload the theme and check mod_rewrite rules in .htaccess.

A proper backup of your site requires two things–backup your files and backup your database. See WordPress Backups for details.

With that said, if you were using FTP to download the files from your host to your local machine, can’t imagine that that would adversely affect your blog.

I would check your Permalinks and update your permalink structure via Administration > Settings > Permalinks, or check your .htaccess file.

Ok, these are some good tips…

but… I have no .htaccess file, I didn´t have one when the site worked either.
I don´t know, where to get one, as downloading wordpress doesn´t include one either. Or where should I look for it ?

oh… I can see invisible files, so that isn´t the problem. I can´t find .htaccess

Did you try updating your permalinks?

Ok, I figured out…. thanks for all your help

I did set Common settings to “month and name”, because some plugin wanted me to do so. But I couldn´t save this… wordpress says to me, that I should update .htaccess manually, but as I said in the last post, I can´t find .htaccess.

Now I´ve set it back to default and it works…
