Support » Plugin: Google XML Sitemap Generator » sitemap.xml not working

FYI, the sitemap.xml file was not displaying in a browser search (https://examplesite.com/sitemap.xml). I found this out by trying to make change to my robots.txt file. I ftp’d the updated robots.txt but a browser search of that file kept showing me the old file. That is when I tried to display my sitemap.xml and got a 404 error.

I then deactivated Google XML Sitemap Generator by XmlSitemapGenerator.org and installed Google XML Sitemaps by Arne Brachhold and both files now come up fine in a browser search. Again, just an fyi. I’m staying with the Arne Brachhold solution.

    Hello.

You were using the incorrect url for the sitemap.

Please use the links in the settings page to access your XML sitemap.

the reason we do not use sitemap.xml is because some other less sophisticated plugins which include sitemaps do not provide the facility to disable them and so they cause conflicts.

the URL is available in the settings page and we also add it to your robots.txt file.

If you are still receiving a 404 error then you likely have a configuration error and should refer to our troubleshooting blog for more details.

Thanks for the reply. Any theories as to why when I FTP’d an updated robots.txt file the changes didn’t get updated until I deactivated your plugin?

Yes, I should have mentioned another important point ….. our plugin generates your sitemap/robots file dynamically, which is generally the way wordpress works too.

You won’t find any of the pages/ files in the files system itself as they are generated on demand when the url is navigated to.

Our plugin simply intercepts the standard wordpress robots.txt generation process and injects the various bits and pieces.

This is why we included the robots editing feature in our plugin to make it easier for people to do this, although other plugins may do this more comprehensively.
