I have a number of subdomains that I do not want indexed by Google or any other search engines, but I cannot expressly tell them not to index it, if I can’t provide them with the index that I want them to ignore. Everytime I try to access the sitemap it redirects me to the homepage, and thus Google Search Console can’t access it either for me to tell them not to look at the site.

Is this because I have “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” checked off in Reading that there is no sitemap being generated?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

“Discourage search engines from indexing this site” option should not cause the Yoast sitemap to redirect to the homepage. Your sitemap should still be accessible despite this setting. Do you still expect your sitemap to be accessible?

If so, if you clear your cache after resetting the permalinks (server, plugin, or CDN such as Cloudflare) does this resolve the issue? If you are not sure how to clear your server cache you should speak with your host provider.

Yes I still expect it to be accessible. Are you saying that you can see the sitemap? I’ve cleared all caches on all levels. I need them to be accessible so that I can ensure they are never crawled by search engines. I’ll restrict crawling via Robots.txt but i want to make extra sure they aren’t crawled by specifically submitting the sitemap to be ignored.

    Hi @usat009

The “discourage search engines from indexing this site” option should not cause the Yoast sitemap to redirect to the homepage.

Upon checking your /sitemap_index.xml, there is a 301 redirect to the homepage, but the x-redirect isn’t being handled by the Yoast SEO plugin.

Could you check if you have another plugin or a redirect handled by your server that is redirecting the sitemap to the homepage?

The only other redirect tool on that site is a 404 redirect to homepage. So if it’s redirecting it, it means the sitemap doesn’t exist. I use that same plugin on our main site https://usatcorp.com and there is no redirect issue with the sitemap URL.

@usat009 We checked on the redirect and it appears to be coming from Cloudflare. Can you please try clearing the site cache from Cloudflare and see whether that resolves the issue?

I cleared it, but it seems to still be redirecting, and I have no redirects set up in cloudflare. The only redirects set-up are for shifting www to non-www addresses.

We are sorry to hear that you’re still having trouble with our plugin. Due to the nature of the issue, we’ll need to take a look at your setup. However, we are unable to do it here as this is a public forum.

So, if you have an active Yoast SEO Premium subscription or if you can consider buying one, we can investigate the issue further directly on your setup privately through email.

However, if you don’t wish to get the Yoast SEO Premium subscription, that’s completely fine. In this case, you’ll need to troubleshoot the issue further on your setup as we are literally out of any clue at this moment without taking a look at the setup. So, someone from the community might step forward as well who has experienced or is familiar with the issue.

    Thanks for your understanding!

We have a premium for our primary domain, but only the basic on all the subdomains as yoast premium doesn’t appear to cover all domains. Or does it? And I just didn’t install it on them? Or does every subdomain require it’s own premium key? We don’t actually want the subdomains to rank or appear in search results at all.

    Hi,

The number of subscriptions you’ll need will depend on your website setup. You can refer to this article for more information – https://yoast.com/help/can-i-use-the-plugin-on-multiple-sites/

But based on the information so far, it doesn’t look to be related to the Yoast SEO plugin specifically as to why your /sitemap_index.xml is redirecting to the homepage.
