Support » Plugin: Yoast SEO » sitemap-link directs back to homepage

  • Resolved lilleulven

Way back I used a google XML Sitemap tool, which has been disabled and deleted for at least 6 months if not a year. Back then I also enabled the Yoast sitemap feature.
When I want to check my sitemap via the link given in General Yoast SEO it directs me to, however, from there I am directly redirected to (homepage) and not the XML page, I thought to find.
Reading someone else’s thread here I found that I should be able to find more information about my sitemap behind this link:
I can access it from a non-logged-in browser, even in incognito mode, so access rights should not be an issue.
However, the page opening still does not contain any sitemap information on my blog. It has some general information about sitemaps and would tell me the last modified date of said sitemap, if only it could find something, which it does not. (See screenshot here) So I tried triggering the generation of a new sitemap file by using Settings -> Permanentlinks and saving without making any changes. However, that seems to change nothing at all.

Could you have a look into what is going on here?

    Thanks in advance.

We are sorry to hear that you are having an issue with sitemap index, and we’d be more than happy to investigate the matter further for you.

Yoast SEO sitemaps can be loaded using two URLs, the pretty permalink one and a non-pretty permalink.

    Pretty Permalink:
    Non-Pretty Permalink:

The good news is that the non-pretty permalink successfully loads so we know Yoast SEO is creating the sitemap for your site. However, the pretty permalink redirects to the homepage so let’s find out why.

Using this status checker, we see the redirect has a status X-Redirect-By: redirection. This means another plugin, most likely the Redirection plugin, handles the redirect. Please review the Redirection plugin’s (or the redirect plugin you’re using) list of redirect to find and remove the sitemap_index.xml redirect to the homepage.

Please note that browsers cache redirects so you may need to clear your browser cache to confirm the redirect is removed. Not sure how? We’ve got a guide to help you here.

Thank you so much for your help, @amboutwe šŸ™‚
Found and removed the redirect and now the sitemap link works like a charm again.

Note to self: when looking for redirects just don’t search for the complete link…
