I’ve been trying this plugin after problems with Google XML Sitemap and am seeing this error in Google Webmaster

“Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.”

The sitemaps linked within sitemap_index.xml seem to be ok but a little worrying to see the warning. google must be seeing the same formatted webpage as we do when viewing the xml in a browser

confirmed. just outputs .xml in html format, not typical stylized and correct form.

That’s not confirmed John, sorry to say. The XML sitemap itself is normal XML, it just gets stylized, but if something isn’t working there it’s probably due to another plugin or theme doing output that it shouldn’t. However, if you don’t provide your XML sitemap URL, there’s no way for me to see what’s wrong.

Hi Joost, how are you? First of all thank you very much for your plugin. I am relatively new to WordPress,so please forgive my ignorance. I have managed to set up my Website using the Local Business Theme. I am having the same problems as above and I hope you can help me. Basically I added the Yoast SEO Plugin and when I entered the SiteMap option I generated the .xml sitemap page and then I copied and pasted the sitemap_index.xml into Google Webmaster, but for some reason I keep getting an issue that the site map is HTML and the description reads “Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.” I am not really sure what else I am meant to do. Can you advise me as to where I might have gone wrong or any changes I need to make. With thanks – Ash
