WordPress SEO version:188.8.131.52
I did this: I am not sure I did anything except make settings in all my main page regarding Meta Robots follow, Include in Sitemap and priority
I expected the plugin to do this: Didn’t expect anything adverse to happen
Instead it did this: Went to check the site map in Google Webmaster tools and clicking on sitemap link discovered the error message in the pink box:
“This page contains the following errors:
error on line 2 at column 6: XML declaration allowed only at the start of the document
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.”
Firstly the rendering of the page up to the first error is not shown and second I noticed that Google has since indexed anyway regardless after saying pending earlier on when I first spotted this. So perhaps it is best to ignore this. Yes , No ?
The same page appears when I click the link for the sitemap in the Yoast plugin dashboard. So, I see that the sitemap does not live at the root level of my site. So thinking that I could wipe it and perhaps Yoast plugin will rebuild it is not an option.
So what do I do now?
Your best advice appreciated.
Just on a final note. I have tried several approaches to sitemaps and getting Google to index and invariably they always get mucked up. Is this typical?…..Typical technology being cantankerous or Google cantankerous?
