I had originally installed the GTM code snippet in the header of my code and Analytics was tracking the events well – I could see them in the debug view. My senior dev doesn’t want the GTM snippet in the code so I added Google Tag Manager to Sitekit instead (we already had Sitekit connected).

The problem is that now, I can’t see any of the custom GTM events recording in debug view on Analytics, so I assume it isn’t receiving the data anymore.

Thanks for reaching out @missgoodies, and explaining in details what you’re experiencing.

As you’re not seeing any custom GTM events recording, please share the following and we can advise on this further:

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
    2. Can you confirm that you’ve selected the same Tag Manager property that you had connected previously, when you had the Tag Manager snippet placed manually into your sites head?
    3. Have you checked the tagassistant.google.com service, or can you share what you’re using to determine the events not firing?

Once we have the above we can hopefully determine the cause. It may be related to your Analytics snippet being placed via Site Kit and you’re checking for events while logged in. The default configuration for a Site Kit placed Analytics snippet is to not include logged in traffic. Another possibility may your Tag Manager settings within Site Kit, including whether you’ve selected the option to allow Site Kit to insert your Tag Manager snippet.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above.

Awesome, thanks James. I’ve submitted the site health information privately and included three screenshots.
Yes I have been using the debug in Google Tag Manager and I can see that it’s not firing events/collecting data for the right container anymore. You will see what I mean from screenshots. I think it is connected to the right container but unsure… maybe you can determine from the image?

As an aside, there is nothing on my Sitekit dashboard to indicate that Google Tag Manager is connected. In the connected services settings it says it is connected but am I supposed to see some data in the dashboard? Thanks.

Many thanks for sharing these additional insights @missgoodies.

Based on reviewing the screenshots you kindly shared events do seem to be firing. The “Linked In Follow” event isn’t firing, although this is something configurable within Tag Manager and not Site Kit. The “Click on team member” event is firing.

I think it is connected to the right container but unsure… maybe you can determine from the image?

From reviewing your Site Health information you do have the Tag Manager module within Site Kit connected. It’s connected the the following conainer: GTM-NHP••••

As an aside, there is nothing on my Sitekit dashboard to indicate that Google Tag Manager is connected. In the connected services settings it says it is connected but am I supposed to see some data in the dashboard? Thanks.

You can see the services that are connected within Site Kit by visiting “Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services”. In your case you can click on the Tag Manager tab to view the connected container, and even click on the edit button to check further settings. Note also that there is no Tag Manager specific information displayed on the Site Kit dashboard, as Tag Manager itself doesn’t have any specific metrics, it’s used to connect your site to different services or add code snippets to your site.

I also performed some checks on your site both manually and via using the tagassistant.google.com service, which differs to Tag Manager debug mode feature you mentioned. I can see that your Analytics hits are firing as expected. For your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) snippet you have it placed via Site Kit but you also have it recording from the connected Google Tag Manager snippet. You may wish to disable Site Kit from placing your GA4 snippet considering the same property already recording visits from Tag Manager.

Back to your events not firing query, events are not something that you can configure within Site Kit. The plugin has placed the snippet as expected, and it’s working as expected, as you can see from the screenshots I provided above, with user engagement events firing on my visit. If you have specific events you wish to track, other than the standard automatically collected events with GA4, have you tried reaching out to the Tag Manager Help Center, where the product experts have more insights into Tag Manager configurations than we do here in the Site Kit support forums?

Thanks for this. My main problem I think, while you says the tag is functional, it does not seem to be connected to the data stream G-8XEELYBST9 in Analytics anymore. I used to use debug view in Analytics to check the events were being recorded but that view is now blank. Therefore I assume they are not being recorded. What is the point after all, in having tags and triggers and events if I cannot inspect them? 😛

I understand that you may not be able to help. Do you think it’d be better to reach out to Tag Manager or Analytics in this case?

    Thanks for the update @missgoodies.

it does not seem to be connected to the data stream G-8XEELYBST9 in Analytics anymore.

I revisited your Site Health information which you kindly shared and it looks like this was connected from when you shared this. See below. You can also view this from your Site Health status, under the Site Kit section:
    analytics_4_web_data_stream_id: 3599•••••• analytics_4_measurement_id: G-8X•••••••• analytics_4_use_snippet: yes

From reviewing your sites source code at present it looks like you’re not using Site Kit to place your Google Analytics 4 snippet. This is fine, as it does seem you’re using Tag Manager for this. From checking this further it looks like you have successfully connected the mentioned GA4 data stream, see below:

Based on the above, what I suspect is happening is you’re looking for the measurement ID from checking your sites source code. As you’re using Tag Manager for your GA4 snippet this won’t be output within your sites source code, but it will be collecting data from the tag inside the connected Tag Manager container (GTM-NHPRDBC). I can confirm from checking tagassistant.google.com that my visits are recording to both your UA and GA4 property.

I understand that you may not be able to help. Do you think it’d be better to reach out to Tag Manager or Analytics in this case?

For event specific queries, the Tag Manager Help Center is indeed the best resource. If, however, you have any queries based on the above let me know. Analytics tags within Tag Manager, and web data streams can be confusing!

Thanks James. The events never appeared in the debug view but they are appearing in the reports, weirdly. Appreciate your assistance!
