• Hello All,
I’m using Siteground for my host. I automatically installed WP2.1.1 into a subdirectory on my site using Fantastico. Everything seems to be working fine except when I try to edit a template style.css file in the Theme Editor. After pressing the update button, it shows that the updates have been edited successfully, but the changes do not take effect on screen. FYI:

    • I have cleared the cache numerous times.
    • I do not have any plugins installed, it is a brand new/clean installation.
    • Changing the file permissions to 755 or 777 does not help.
    • I have WP2.0 installed in my root directory and it has been working fine for almost a year. (can edit the templates)
    • I’ve tried many templates all have the same trouble.

I’ve contact Siteground tech support and they responded quickly, but have no answer. I’ve looked all over the net, but have found no solutions. There is one other thread here in the support forum that mentions something to do with mod_rewrite and permalinks with SiteGround:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/94054

At the end Siteground support states: “Thus, as I have stated above, I believe that the only available solution at the moment is moving your WordPress files in the main directory.”

This makes me think that maybe there is a problem with their setup and the way it handles WP installations that are not in the root directory. Does anyone else have this problem with Siteground? The Fantastico installer allows you to easily install into subdirectories, plus their documentation says this is possible:

    http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/wordpress/wordpress_installation.htm

Siteground has been an okay host so far and I’d like to stick with them, but I have wasted way too much time on this problem and need a solution asap. Is there a solution to my problem or should I just jump ship and find a better host?

Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks.
    marc

  • What happens if you use FileZilla to edit the theme files?

Hello MichaelH, Thanks for responding to my Q.

I can see by the time/date/size stamp, the file is changed. Also if I download the style.css via filezilla, I can see the changes were saved. WP just will not read the file if in a subdirectory. (on siteground).

I don’t know if it is just me having trouble or if anyone else experiences the same thing. My install is brand new, no plugins or anything and I am just using the default template. FYI:, cache is cleared and I’ve tried it with two different browsers (FF/IE) having the same results. WordPress works fine if in the root, but if in a subdirectory it glitches.

Siteground tech support has been good in the past, but they really haven’t given me any help on this one (therefore posting here). It seems to be a config problem which they should be able to resolve, especially since they bill themselves as the #1 WP Hosting service and offer the sub directory install feature.
