You’ll need to use FTP to either replace that file (from a new or backup copy of your theme) or deactivate the theme by changing the name on the theme folder – see:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Login_Trouble#Deactivate_Theme
But my problem isn’t not being able to log in, but that the site no longer appears when you go to the address.

But my problem isn’t not being able to log in
Are you sure?

What I posted is how to address the problem you are having.
Okay, thanks, I thought I was still logged in… I don’t have a backup copy of the Sample child theme, will I be able to get what I need easily?
Where did you get it? We don’t have access to commercial themes.
Okay, it says I have to rename it, but how do I get to where I can rename it (wp-content/themes) if I cannot log in? Also I have not used FTP so the instructions don’t make a lot of sense to me.
But thanks anyway for any advice you can give..
@ WPYogi – I got it from Genesis site, the sample child theme is I think their standard child theme.
FTP is a generic (not part of WP) way to access files on a server – you’ll need to ask your hosting company for help with setting that up or look on their support DOCS – it’s not hard to use – see:
http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients
Okay, thanks, WPyogi, unfortunately I gotta go now so I shall check it out tomorrow.
For support with Genesis themes, this is a good place to go: http://www.studiopress.com/forums/
okay, my host suggested i do this:
Broken Theme
Log into cPanel
Click phpMyAdmin
Locate correct WordPress Database
Browse table wp_options
Go to page 2 change – the template and style sheet, type in: twentyten.
i did this and can now log in to my admin for the site, but the site itself is still a white screen. what do i have to do to get it back?
in fact, there is now a red message in the admin page:
ERROR: The themes directory is either empty or doesn’t exist. Please check your installation.
okay, i have now reactivated the genesis framework – but the sample child theme cannot be activated..
so now i have a fairly crippled looking site but better than the white screen i suppose.
maybe i should try the genesis forum to see what i should do to get my site back again.
now the site is gone again..
this is unbelievably frustrating.
