    Running a project management system for my client’s work, where they can log in for discussions, find files, approve tasks etc, via the ‘WP-Project’ plugin.

    That directory is set aside specifically for that purpose, project management.

    The site updated to 5.1, an auto-update.

    I go to login today, all I have is a white screen and the letters “pm”.

    Have written to the plugin people, see if they can help, also asking here if there’s anything I can to do prevent these update-related disasters?

    Yes disaster is the correct word when a client cannot login and emails me that his access to the site is gone and is there a problem we need to talk about? I probably won’t lose this contract, as this client has worked with me before but if a new client? Yes, disaster is the word.

    I’ve run a manual restore to the 23rd, so the site is back up now, however I’m told it will auto-self destruct again. I though this version was supposed to NOT do the self-destruct thing?

    So what am I supposed to do now, in this world of compulsory and destructive updates?

    So first things first, WordPress does not auto-update for major version (5.1.0 is a major version), for this to happen you either have to enable it via config file editing your self, installing a plugin to enable it, or your host does it.

    As to the problem, a white screen generally means a fatal error, the reason for this will be in your error log, if you could check there we’ll be in a better spot to help out. Unfortunately we can’t say much without those errors, other than telling you to use FTP to rename the plugins and/or themes directories in the wp-content folder as it’s likely a conflict causing this breakage on your end.

    Found an error log thingy. Lots of text; should I paste it all here?

    Actually rather than clog this site up I’ll send it as a notepad file to the plugin developers, as I guess they’re the ones that will have to figure out how to fix it.

    Sorry if I seem grumpy but getting really sick of phone, Windows and now website updates that wreck things that WERE working fine, before being “updated”.

    It’s not an improvement.

    You’re fine and not grumpy at all, we totally understand that it’s taxing when a site stops acting like it used to 🙂

    The log will likely be timestamped, so anything around the time when the error occurred would be useful, but you may of course also wait and see what the plugin developer has to say first.

    Well the plugin people were able to go in and figure out the problem and it seems to be working OK with 5.1 now.

    The error logs made it easy to avoid any arguing or debate, could just show them and they could fix it, so thanks!

    After updating to 5.1, when I try to go to my blog I now get: The requested URL was rejected. If you think this is an error, please contact the webmaster.
