• Hello

I have been using your theme for several years now and this is the first time the theme is causing the site to break during an upgrade. Earlier today i.e. 11/2/22 i saw the notification for upgrading to wordpress 6.1 whioch was rolled out yesterday i believe. Like always i used the automatic upgrade feature and the site suddenly stopped working. What i mean is it froze and i couldn’t get in even via the hosting providers cPanel or the client dashboard. Contacted the hosting provider and undernetah is a verbatim copy of their response : –

“`Looks like your wordpress was upgraded automatically from 6.0.3 to 6.1 and there is some compatiblity issues with this version and the plugins/themes you are using.

I restored the files from last day backup and your site started working. I then upgraded the wordpress manually as the upgrade option was showing in the wp-admin and it broke the site again.

I have now restored the backup again and site is working fine.

I have also disabled the auto upgrade from cPanel.”

I then again tried to upgrade the site myself by disabling all plugins but the site crashed again. When i looked under the themes it is highlighted in red that the theme is incompatible. Please advise. Thanks

Also, i am using a child theme, per your initial suggestion years ago.

    Hi there,

I just updated WP to 6.1 and didn’t notice any issues:
    https://www.screencast.com/t/fELs9yCs

We haven’t received any other reports on this as well so let’s go through some debugging steps:

    1. Deactivate all plugins and activate the parent theme – does the issue still occur?

    2. If yes, then activate a Twenty series WP theme to test – does the issue still occur?

    Let me know 🙂

First FYI, i want to let you know i am not very familiar with these things and whatever little i knew i have since forgotten since i don’t tinker on websites. In other others i am kind of challenged in these things. 🙂

2-So i have few questions: The child theme was configured years ago and has several rules (CSS and other rules) added to it. I don’t even remember everything that has been added. Naturally i will lose those customizations if i use the parent theme. I understand you want to troubleshoot but please keep this mind. Now, will i lose any customizations if i deactivate the child theme?

3- When you ask me to activate the twenty two theme what am i supposed to do? Just activate it and try to upgrade? Don’t mess with the site in any way, correct?

    Thanks

Sounds like you are referring to a live site with traffic?

So in that case, I would recommend starting a staging site so we can go through the debugging tips without changing your live site 🙂

It’s the only way to debug unfortunately.

Like i have been saying the site has been operational for several years.

And like i mentioned i wouldn’t know how to start a staging site. Can you please direct me to some resources that show how to do this? Are you suggesting you or someone from your team will have to log in to the site and debug it yourself?

I can stop traffic by a plugin that’s not the issue. The issue is about the customizations. So my question to earlier was, are you suggesting that for testing purposes i try switching the themes? And will it affect the customizations in any way? If it will not affect the customizations i can try switching them and then revert back. Will that be of any help or do you need admin access?

Ok. My hosting provider has created a staging site.

Last time i was talking to your developer Tom, the email address he had provided was ‘support@generatepress.com’ to send any sensitive information that should not be posted in a public forum. Is the email still valid to send you the staging address and credentials?

To confirm you will need admin access just to the website, correct? Thanks

No – unfortunately, the forum rule here forbids us from asking for users’s website information.

The staging site is for you to debug without impacting your existing live site as you had some concerns here.

With the staging site, can you go through the steps here?

This is unlikely a theme issue – we would’ve seen something by now.

Actually when i go back to do a final check before troubleshooting the first thing i noticed was the theme incompatibility notification i mentioned above was already gone. I also found out a really old plugin that is also breaking the site. But either way the site has updated and working fine. I have also started a thread on the suspect plugin’s page letting the developer know the issue.

Thanks a lot for the help and a good theme.
