Support » Plugin: Subscribe2 - Form, Email Subscribers & Newsletters » site owner got a generic “Contact administrator” error when Posting

… this post today. I figure it may have been an anomaly, as some recipients got the email but 2 test email accounts of his own did not. Has this issue come up before? I don’t think this has for him in all the posts previously… I did perform a number of Updates yesterday, so maybe there was a conflict there — not sure how to test without Posting again? Please advise. Thanks, S

@mattyrob got it… makes sense. I will resend this evening after I get a final go-ahead from the site owner (who has tried 3 separate times to send this Post, so has some reservations about doing it “one more time”, naturally). Thanks!

@mattyrob I just re-sent the Subscribe2 post and got the generic “Internal Server Error” once again on the page: /wp-admin/post.php. I viewed the error_log, and there was no new entries whatsoever in: /logs/nginx_error_log after a last entry of 1.5 hours ago was logged concerning a crawler not finding a proper robots.txt file. Any thoughts?

Regarding the emails – some sending and some failing – that has absolutely been reported before is pretty much always to do with server side restrictions on the sending of emails.

My hosting provider for example allows 300 emails per hour so I use an email queuing solution to stage the sending of emails in small groups every 5 minutes.

@mattyrob this is the first email that has refused (repeatedly, not sporadically) to send at all… there is no “some” involved. Between the last post that was sent and now, there have only been 24 new recipients added to Public Subscribers, for a new total of 714. I will double-check with my hosting provider, but I don’t believe that to be a tipping point on mailing quotas. I’ll also ask them about staging the post email in smaller groups as well. -S

I think our replies are getting out of sync and adding confusion.

From the comment immediately above it seems that individual emails to add new subscribers are working but post notifications are clearly not.

In Subscribe2 > Settings what value are you using for recipients per email? If this is 1 then the plugin and site is trying to send (currently) 714 emails at the time of posting, each requires a connection to the email server. This may be the tripping point too. Try changing that setting to 1,000 – that will add all recipients to the BCC email address and send a single email – it’s should therefore work a lot faster – if that works we know what the Internal Server Error issue is.

Again, a solution to this is storing the emails up and sending smaller batches over time to take the load off the server as the post is published.

From the host’s support team member: “There’s a default timeout with Virtualmin called IPCCommTimeout which tries to prevent runaway PHP scripts. I upped it from 31 seconds to 301 seconds, so I highly doubt you’ll have many more issues with that for this site.”

FWIW! Now and on any future support requests similar in nature. Thanks for your time.

That sounds positive, so is everything now working as expected without the timeouts?

@mattyrob, yes — the previous notification to subscribers that was getting blocked went through this time with the upping of the IPCCommTimeout feature.
HTH future potential issues that are similar to this one.
