I was in the middle of importing a site from one wordpress install to another (3.2.1 to 3.2.1), and the import seems to have stopped somewhere in the middle. I had mapped some of the users to existing users, and had also selected to import all the content, as this was a photo-heavy site (around 2-3 gbs). After plugging all that in, I let wordpress do it’s magic, and it did. For a little bit.

It said it couldn’t import a few items that were .doc’s and then never said anything else on that page. I went into the FTP and saw that it had imported about half of the images, and it then converted my XML export to .txt file and attached it as a media file. After digging around in the site a bit more, I could tell the whole file hadn’t been processed, as none of the posts had been transferred.

So what are some good next steps? If I try to re-import the XML file again, am I likely to end up with multiples of everything that made it on the first time? Thanks in advance.

  • I’m not sure how the XML import works but if it was created with sense, I would think it avoids duplicates. Simply by checking page titles, previous post ID’s etc. But maybe not.

I’ve heard of this issue before so keep looking around this forum.

Could it be that your hitting your servers maximum execution time?! Usually about 30 seconds. How many posts are we talking about here?

It was actually only about 160 posts, but since it imports all the media first, it wasn’t getting to it. I read around that the importer was smart enough not to import duplicate content, so I kept re-trying it. It took about 4 times, but it finally completed the upload.

My trick was to check on the media library in a different tab, and each time it stopped increasing, I’d refresh the page that was importing everything. That way I didn’t have to reassign all of the authors each time.
