Support » Fixing WordPress » Site has total crashed.

  • I was adding a couple of new plugins to my college news site last nite, and after activating one, the entire WP site crashed, with the only output being…

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN”>
    <META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=utf-8"></HEAD>

No header, no content, no login, no nothing. I FTPed in and all the files seem to be there. Even phpmyadmin’ed to check the database and it seems to be intact.

Went in and deleted the set of plugins I’d just been working on to see if that would reanimate the site, and still blank pages. Before I reupload the entire fresh file set of 1.5.2, I want to know if anyone else has suffered a crash like this, and what the likely cause was. I’ve considered it overwrote something somewhere, but what ONE file going corrupt, would cause the entire site to crap out like this? Any help appreciated. Thanks…

If it wasn’t the plugin you were working with, then it was some other file probably. I wouldn’t reupload all just yet.

I have the orig. wp-content/ dir renamed. Uploaded clean 1.5.2 wp-content file set. Was able to log into site, and view with generic theme. All data ok. Copied the theme I have customized to new content folder. It shows ok, with my custom header w/graphic in place, postings and pages all there. The side bar is messed up because I haven’t copied over the plugins directory with my plugins used for this theme yet. That’s next, and may tell me that THAT is the issue. Why it would crash the entire site I don’t know. So, let’s see what plugins it will take to duplicate the problem.

Seem to have fixed it now. Not sure what caused it..but part of it was the Wordspew plugin…deleted and reinstalled, and it works fine now.

The Banner plugin also seemed to have an issue.

Very strange issue, however. What tools exist out there to debug a crashing/dead/flatlined install of WP? I heard about something called wp-medic? Can anyone tell me about this one?

if your site dies because of a plugin, hard to determine other than process of elimination… and this isn’t just WP we’re talking about, it’s any dynamic PHP site. 😉

    To elaborate on David’s suggestion..
Manually delete all the plugins (removing them from plugins directory is fine too) and try again.

Then add them one by one.
