Single name author slug returns 404

I have 2 contributors with single word names. When you click on their slug, a “-1” is appended to their name. So instead of reaching their archive page, you get a 404 error.
EX: http://ineedcoffee.com/seeing-the-world-one-starbucks-at-a-time/
Author is Winter. Click on Winter and it directs you to:
http://ineedcoffee.com/by/winter/-1
