Support » Fixing WordPress » Simple navigation link issue

  • Hi there,
    This is my site: http://www.aast.umd.edu

On the navigation menus I have a bunch of pages that are parents to all the pages in the drop down menu. I don’t however have any content to put on the parent pages and I don’t want users clicking on them and being led to an empty page. Is there a way to make the navigation items like “Research” “Programs” into just words and not links to pages? The user shouldn’t be able to click on them but rather only on the child pages. Hope this makes sense. I feel like there is a straightforward solution to this but I can’t find it.

  • If you make the link simply a hashtag (#) that will do the job.

However, keep in mind that some mobile devices (particularly larger tablets) can have a difficult time getting dropdown menus to work properly. You’re typically better off to create a simple landing page for those, or even just have them link directly to the most important child page below them.

Another way that I use sometimes is that I use the Yoast SEO plugin, and that lets me set a redirection URL on pages, so for the landing pages that I don’t want anyone to see, I can set that page to redirect to the “correct” URL that I want users to see.
