Simple Email Plugin Sample Code

I’d like to write a simple plugin that sends emails when posts, pages, etc. are made on the blog. The user could set options, like send email to contact list only when posts are made, only when new media is added, etc.

I’ve tried the wordpress codex Writing a Plugin, but my code looks sloppy.

Can someone post the code for this type of thing?
