[Resolved] Simple Brief Question for Anyone Running Multisites

  • I want to move forward setting up “create a network” to run 2 domains off the same WP core and the same DB.

But before I go down this path I need to know if my current permalinks structure will change. There are serious Search Engine Catalog and externally created links to my site that cannot have a change in URL structure happen.

Does “Create a Network” cause http://www.example.com/current-permalink-reference/ to change?

Thanks so much. Ready to take next step, but need this answer first.

  • Part of that depends. Is http://www.example.com/current-permalink-reference/ a page or a blog post? By default, WordPress will prepend the slug “/blog” to blog post permalinks on the root site in the network (there are ways to turn that off, but they carry their own caveats with them).

WordPress will not change your permalinks for existing pages at all. If you import another WordPress site into your network, make sure all of the sample posts and pages are deleted and removed from the trash on the new site before you perform the import, otherwise WordPress might have to alter the permalinks of the pages you are importing (if they conflict with the pages/posts that are already in the site/trash).

They are the slugs, not pages.

I think I am learning that my existing public urls will change. So I need to think through how I want to do this. Thanks Curtiss

As a caveat on Curtis. IF you use SubDOMAIN multisite (i.e. sitename.domain.com), you will NOT change your URLs.

If you use Subfolder, yes, you get /blog/ forced in there.
