Thanks, I followed the FTP steps and set the admin password. Now when I signin as admin it takes me to the login again with my username (mjworks) and password filled in. When I press enter it takes me to the wordpress site with minimal functionality. ie I can see Dashboard, 1 plugin (anti hacking tools) and my user profile.

I tried deleting anti hacking tools using FTP but this made no difference. What is going on?????????

What are the permissions for wp-config.php, wp-admin and for random files and folders in wp-admin?

If there is an error_log in the WordPress root, open it and look at the most recent errors. Post the complete error messages without duplicates here. If the list is quite long, use pastebin and add a link here.

    The permissions

    wpconfig.php = adfrw (0644)
    wpadmin folder = flcdmpe (0755)
all riles in wpadmin = adfrw (0644)

There are no recent (only some from 2013) errors in the error log.

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

Will the dashboard allow you to activate a different theme? If you have another theme loaded try to activate it. If you don’t have another theme loaded, load twenty fifteen and activate it. If your dashboard won’t allow you to make theme changes, tell me how many themes you have when you post next.

    Resetting plugins didn’t work.

The dashboard won’t allow me to make any changes. I have 2 themes loaded but I can’t access either one in dashboard as my user name.

Access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

I renamed the active them. When I try to log in as admin, now it takes me to a blank screen with my domain name/wp-admin/ (before it took me back to the login screen with my user name and password)

How many admin users do you have?

Check your error_log to see if you are recording any errors after the theme change.

Does this halp? When I try to login as admin, I am redirected to the address below:

    http://*****.com.au/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2F*****.com.au%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1

Where *** is my domain name

No errors are recording. How do I check the number of admin users?

Don’t worry about the number of admin users. Here is an article for information: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-an-admin-user-to-the-wordpress-database-via-mysql/

Please be careful using phpmyadmin. There is no undo if you were to do something wrong.

I do not want you to DO what the article says. I just want you to use it as a guide and look at some items for me. First look at the users table and find yourself, then find your ID.

Then go to the uesrmeta table and look for wp_capabilities and wp_user_level FOR YOUR user_id. Check to see if they exactly match those in the article.

If there is not an exact match, edit the entry. Spaces matter, make sure you are accurate.

I don’t have access to phpmyadmin right now. I have sent an email requesting login details but I won’t have that till my morning (another 5 hours away). Is there any other options I can try tonight using FTP?

not really….there is a program called Adminer. It is one file that you put in root.

Can you not find phpmyadmin in your hosting admin? Your login info is in wp-config.php

It turns out the site has been hacked by darkshadow!
