 * Is there a way to tell by looking at it if someone’s site is using a sidebar 
   or if it’s just a column? Or another way to tell. I like the setup of another
   site but looks like two columns and a sidebar but I want to be sure??

 * you could try and check what CSS classes are used on the columns, and on the 
   items in the column … however, this is not a error-proof way as those CSS classes
   are not directly from WordPress but a choice of the theme developer …
