I upgraded from 2.0.5 to 2.0.6 following the instructions to the letter. It appears all went well except….

Everything in my sidebar is the way it was, although I now have the following message in the Sidebar box on the Sidebar Widgets page.

    Default Sidebar

Your theme will display its usual sidebar when this box is empty. Dragging widgets into this box will replace the usual sidebar with your customized sidebar.

I do not recall it being there before. More important, I cannot drag or drop any of the boxes that are in the Sidebar box or the Available Widgets box. I get the “four arrows” symbol but cannot move the boxes with it.

Any suggestions? I did not replace or do anything to sidebar.php in the folder for the theme (Blue Horizon 3.0 by Kaushal Sheth) and had no problems using Sidebar Widgets prior to the upgrade.

  • Just after posting the above, I noticed there is a small box in the upper right hand corner similar to what normally appears on the right hand side of a Text widget in the Sidebar box. When I put the cursor over it, “Configure” pops up but nothing happens regardless of whether I double click, right click or left click on it and I cannot move it.

Viewing the site in IE7 moves the “Default Sidebar” message box to the right and reveals the it covers several widget boxes in Firefox None of the widget boxes can be moved using IE7 either.

Do you have all the widget javascripts (the scriptaculous folder) installed on your site? Make sure you didn’t accidentally remove them during the upgrade process.

That’s it! The upgrade does not include the scriptaculous folder. Once I FTP’d it to the site from the copy I had downloaded it was back to normal.

It’s odd the scriptaculous folder isn’t in the upgrade since I thought the default theme that is also upgraded was “widgetized” and, presumably, would also need those files. At least the instructions should indicate that people using the Sidebar Widgets not delete that folder in the process because the instructions say to delete the /wp-includes/ folder with the exception of possibly one file.

    Thank you.

Widgets are not a part of the default wordpress installation.

The latest version of the widgets plugin is quite happy to function if you leave the scriptaculous folder in the wp-content/plugins/widgets folder. This will eliminate your issues with upgrading.

I am also having a problem.

I backed up my sidebar.php file, and upgraded to 2.0.6. I copied the custom parts of my sidebar.php back into the new sidebar (and yes, saved them), and I still have nothing in my sidebar.

    Any ideas?

    Sorry. Nevermind.

I don’t know how, or why, but they just came back into being without any effort on my part. I had flushed my browser cache and they weren’t showing up. Now – Poof!

    One heart attack averted. 😉
