Sidebar thumbnails

I am building a portfolio site and I have a section for displaying portfolio items. I wanted to show thumbnails of my projects in the sidebar and wondered if there were any good ways of pulling from the posts automatically in a format similar to this:

Any ideas how to achieve this in an automated way?
