Please help SIDEBAR not showing up on the side anymore..
The only theme that shows it on the side is wordpress classic??? REALLY STRANGE

This might be a wordpress bug but I worked very hard on customizing a theme (http://janany.rizzyc.com) for a few days and then i decided to password protect the some posts.

Everythign looked ok, up until I unlocked the post.. i Unlocked one post then ALL OF THEM (they had the same password) got unlocked and now the sidebar remains underneath main panel. I’ve tried different themes and now they are ALL doing the same thing…

I’m completely baffled if someone prolly goes to the site now it might actually be ok but once you put in a password it will all be messed up again.

liferightnow… i think that you are right, the way the sidebar is showing up it is definately somethign screwy but why is that when i change the theme to default or the original theme (i have Done this numerous times) the sidebar is still showing up at the bottom. I have been looking at a cache folder could this have stored the screwy settings.. let me change the theme back to default (fully unomoded/hacked). Is there a universal area where the layout of a theme is stored?

liferightnow :: I think you may be right, but it’s happening in multiple themes.

rizzyc :: Just because it was working before doesn’t mean you didn’t have a sleeping giant waiting to really mess things up when you make a subtle change. You need to look at the source of your site html (what you are sending to a viewing user’s browser)… it is full of div’s for every line of some of your posts… I even saw this ‘<div />’ and almost fell over… Terrible. It is possible that this was poorly formated html that you inadvertantly cut and pasted form an html-enabled hotmail message… let that be a lesson against using hotmail. 🙂 You need to know how to troubleshoot your own html if you want to modify a theme… and never cut and paste anything into an entry except for straight ascii text.

And seriously, your theme is not stock… it’s not unadulterated… whatever’s going on looks like someone has been trying to make changes without knowledge of what they’re doing. No offense, but if you don’t understand a lot of the lingo you see us using then you probably should consider befriending someone near you who is good with xhtml and css.

waraxe: no, the connections theme does not have that many divs by default.

rizzyc: you can find themes at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/. the only thing i can think of is that you modified the default theme as well, because you should not be getting the sidebar below the content like that.

liferightnow… i downloaded the very first theme from the link you sent me, its called almost spring… as you can see.. the side bar is stil fudged up???
    argh…..
this has never happened to me when i was workign on my site (rizzyc.com) and all i did was make a password protected post and then unlock it. If you are using 2.0, try making a password protected post and then unlock it, see if your sidebar gets screwy like that too??
i’m thinking that the password protected function triggered some sort of change in other parts of the code

I give up, nothing works i’m deleting everythign from the website and starting from scratch.. thanks for everyones help anyways 🙁

I would suggest that you do NOT copy n paste from any email client (or windows word-processing program either!) – they are NOTORIOUS for throwing crap html.

If you have to copy n paste from email, paste first into a “plain vanilla” text editor such as notepad2 from http://www.flos-freeware.ch, then clean it up before you copy n paste it into wp….

i stil blame this on password-protecting posts… if someone ever password protects their posts and then unlocks thema and the sidebar goes to the bottom i wouldnt be surprised that it would mess everything.

I don’t have any problem with password protecting posts creating a sidebar drop.

That’s normally a result of content that’s wider than its container (which could certainly be a result of extraneous div tags, for one thing, as produced by copy n paste from an email client).

🙁 why dosent installing a new fresh theme fix the sidebar problem 🙁
oh well its ok i’m starting from scratch all over again 🙁

Because the posts causing your problem are still there in the database. A new theme accomplishes nothing if the database is still populated.

I deleted all the posts…and guess what.. haha surprise surprise the sidebar is back to normal.. I learned my lesson.. NO MORE copying and pasting from e-mails. I cant believe it was workign fine before and then magically got ruined after p/w protecting the posts. Thanks for all your help and advice everyone. Luckily the blog was just in its testing phase so I didnt delete much.

Well, good to hear you’re back to normal. Go grab a plain vanilla editor, that should help you deal with copy n paste.

i use linux and it has little note padder thingy… its for my gf so i’ll tell her NEVER to copy/paste.. what a headache.. i was just backing up the site and then i thoguht might as well try deleting all the posts. Well atleast she’s happy now lol.
Thanks for all your help guys and girls.

*whew* Yes, no cutting and pasting from email clients (especially crappy ones).

And when people are trying to help you on here and are telling you what is causing the problem… don’t proceed to declare to them what YOU really think the problem is… because if you knew that much YOU’D be the one on here helping other people.
    🙂

    Good Luck!
