I’m trying to make my basic wordpress site have a sidebar similar to the one on this page: http://www.losestomachfat.net

I can’t figure out how to add html into the sidebar, and would like some help figuring out what I need to do.

If you’re using a standard template you can use the widgetised sidebar. Configure your sidebar from the dashboard: Appearance – Widgets. Then drag and drop the HTML option on to your sidebar and insert the code.

If you’re using your own template and it’s not widgetised then add the code in to sidebar.php.

I had trouble trying to figure out how to put HTML into the dynamic sidebar, too, so I tossed together a quick plug-in to handle it: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dynamic-sidebar-html-inserter/

Ben, I’m confused by what you mean by “drag and drop the HTML option on to your sidebar and insert the code”. I can’t find this option anywhere on my 2.7.1 install.
