  • Hi, this could eventually be optionnal, yes.
Can you confirm you would need it ?

    Hej,

I stand by my earlier post 🙂 I think to even have the option would be preferable to not having it. Alas, our forums are currently not much in use, so this is not pressing to me.

    Best

Yeah, the only thing is that the way the plugin works is kind of a hocus-pocus.
There is no built-in function in bbPress to know if a forum/topic/reply has been read or not.

So I have to figure out how to know if all topics have been read VS if the forum has already been opened (current method); which seems quite difficult…
Let me think for a while !

Sounds like a challenge, sounds like fun to the right kind of mind 🙂

    Ah ah 🙂
I think I managed to do it.

Now it really checks if a forum has been totally read. No faking anymore !
I have not yet pushed this new version : I would like you to try it and give me feedback 🙂

1 / backup your database (there is an upgrade routine that will destroy the current data related to the plugin)
2 / install the “dev2” version of the plugin that you can download here (button “clone or download”)

Is it working for you; and can you see if it is slowing the forums ?

If it does not work, keep the “official” version and restore your database.

…But if this seems ok, i’ll upgrade the plugin on WordPress.org 🙂

    Hi Gordie,

I think it works now! I have no idea if it slows down the forums, the load times are (and always have been) all over the place. Would you expect it to slow things down?

EDIT: Actually, it seems Site Load and Page Speed both increase from ~2-3s to ~3-4s. That is not too good.

One minor thing: Before, I had all threads read; some topics are now marked unread. There seems to be no logic behind it, it concerns some old stuff. But of course, for that we have the “Mark all as read” button.

I now have both versions installed, only the dev is activated. How do I progress after you pushed the update? Delete dev, update regular, activate?

Also, it would be great if your plugin would integrate with “Go to First Unread Post”. I have that as well, and some topics are marked unread by one but not the other. It makes no sense… especially, since I have definitely read each and every topic in its entirety.

Yes, it could slow down a little the forums; but I think it should be quite the same.
So I will push the update but keep some of the old datas in case of.
Once the update is pushed, yes, just update the plugin.

Yes, this could happen, not sure exactly why. But that’s for a best 🙂

“Go to First Unread Post” : can you explain me what this should do exactly ?

    (@let-me-see)

I meant this plugin, which has actually not been updated in >2 years: https://wordpress.org/plugins/bbpress-go-to-first-unread-post/

If you look at one of my forums, I think even as unregistered user you should see an encased “>” after every topic. This lets you jump to the first unread post in a thread, and is very helpful in case of longer discussions. One never has to click through their own topics’ subpages any more just to read and answer to the latest posts.

Maybe, you could just add this functionality and I can just drop the other plugin?

    Hi @let-me-see,

I implemented an (optional) “bookmark” function to display a link that goes to the last read reply.
Update to 1.2.7 ! As usual, and because all of this takes time, a href=”http://bit.ly/gbreant”>donate if you like it !

    Hi Gordie,
thanks, but the bookmarks do not seem to work. I also deactivated the other plugin to make sure they don’t conflict, but that did not help.
