I have not been able to reproduce the behaviour you mention, if there’s no featured image defined, the plugin should not show anything. It may be interfering with another plugin or the theme. Can you give us more details? i.e.
When does the problem appear, in lists, in a single post, both…?
Are you using the shortcode?
What theme are you using?
Also a link to the a page with the problem would be very helpful.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try to give you some more information.
The problem does appear in single posts. The excerpt is then displayed under the post title where the featured image would be if there was one.
Curiously the excerpt also appears under the post where the previous and the following post are displayed – which doesn’t make sense to me at all.
I’m not using a short code and didn’t even know there was one.
I’m using a child theme of Bard.
I don’t use any other plugins related to images and their captions.
Here’s an example:

The excerpt is “Mein Rückblick auf meine gelesenen Bücher, gesehenen Filme und Serien und sonstige Erlebnisse und Entdeckungen von Februar bis Mai 2018.“.
Thanks for the link. I think I know where may be the problem… the next / previous links in the theme are trying to show the featured image and for some reason the plugin gets confused. I’ll do some tests with the same theme installed to see if it can be corrected.

Update to the new version 1.17 to see if your problem persist.
I’ve made some changes to the plugin in order to correctly identify the post and not show up when there’s no image. Although I’ve never been able to reproduce the same problem with the excerpt, I think this could solve it.
