  • Can you show a link to a Taxonomy term listing, but not have it open as a sub-menu of a Post type?

Yes, you could probably do that with this plugin in several ways. Here’s one option:

    1. Select the taxonomy submenu item and click the “Copy” button in the submenu toolbar.
    2. Click the “Paste” button in the top-level toolbar. This will create a copy of the menu item in the top-level menu. You can move or edit it as necessary.
    3. Hide the original item by clicking the toolbar button that shows a rectangle with a dashed border. This button hides items without changing their permissions. In this case, that’s a better option than blocking access to the original item because you still want the taxonomy admin page to be available.

I’ve got another WP install on which I somehow managed to to put do this (put a top-level taxonomy index link) without having to hide the original sub-menu item.

But I can’t manage to replicate that on a current site I’m working on. What on earth could account for the difference??

It is using “Posts -> Companies”.

I wondered whether I did it with a Custom URL (ie. edit-tags.php?taxonomy=company), but, no, that still also opens it in the Posts sub-menu as long as that is displayed.

As I mentioned, there are multiple ways to do this. Instead of copying the item, you could cut the original item and then paste it into the top-level menu – that would probably also work. Or you could add a custom menu item, set the “Target page” to “Posts -> Companies” (not using the “Custom URL” option in this case), and then delete the original item.

If you created the custom taxonomy yourself, whichever tool or code snippet that you used to create it might also provide a way to choose the location of the menu item.
