I am trying to show random ads from the same group on two different places on the website. All ads should appear and be visible in only one of the places (widgets?) and the order and wich place it shows up in should be random.

Is that even possible to achieve? Hope i made the question understandable.

    Hi Morgan,

Glad you asked this question, as it pertains to one of my favorite features of Advanced Ads.

It is possible to include the same group multiple times on a page and ensure that ads do not appear on various placements simultaneously. We call the associated option Display only once. You can find a checkbox for it in each ad’s Layout/Output option if you have Advanced Ads Pro enabled.

So your ad setup could look like this: you have two placements: one before the content and one after the content. Now you assign the same group to both placements, which contains two ads. For both ads, the Display only once function is activated.

When you load the page, each of these ads will appear only once. If you have set a random order, the ratio of ad weights determines the probability of which ad will appear first. If you have selected an ordered sequence, the ad with the highest display weight will always appear first and not be shown on the second placement.

    Best regards,
    Joachim

    Hi Morgan,

Please, navigate to Advanced Ads > Groups and edit the group you place there. You can specify the number of visible ads and, for example, adjust the group to show 3 of all contained ads instead of one.

    Hi Morgan,

    Thanks for your reply.

I assume that you have two different widget areas in the sidebar (left/right) and an ad group with multiple ads inside. But the set number of visible ads might be so high that there are no ads left for the second widget.

    I suggest following these steps:

    1. Please, create a sidebar widget placement and assign your ad group to it.
    2. Adjust the group settings to show the wanted number of visible ads, for example, four ads.
    3. Add the Advanced Ads widget to both widget areas and choose the sidebar widget placement.
    4. Enable the display only once function for those ads that you don’t want to show up twice.

Now, the first widget area contains the placement with the group and shows four ads from all contained ad units. The second widget area has the placement with the group and shows four ads as well, but not those showing up in widget area #1 and vice versa.

    Hi Morgan,

    Thanks for your reply.

When you set the number of visible ads to 17 for that group, the first placement will show up all 17 ads. In case the “display only once” function is enabled, those ads cannot appear a second time.

Does it work if you limit the number of visible ads, e.g., to 8?

I created a new group to be shown on the front page only with the same banners. Now the ads in the left placement on articles are not showing up. Puh!

Ok. I would solve this problem in 2 different ways.

Either you can add a second widget area on the home page with simple means. Or you make sure that you show another group on the homepage. I would probably go the second way. For that I would:

    1. create a new group with similar ads and set the number of visible ads to the maximum value, e.g., 17.
    2. create a sidebar widget placement for the homepage.
    3. add a “general display condition” under the advanced placement options of the widget placement for the homepage and select “IS homepage” in it.
    4. for the other two sidebar widget placements, also add a general display condition and set it to “IS NOT homepage”.

This setup will ensure that the widget placement on the homepage will be integrated with the group showing 17 ads but will not appear on other pages.

The other two placements will appear on all pages except the homepage.

I think you should be able to solve your problem with this.

    Best regards,
    Joachim
