Show first blog post on static page?

    Now that you can make any page be a “front page” in WP 2.1, how can I show the latest post from my blog on the virtual home page? I want to do exactly what this person is doing…

    Note that the item at the top of “HOME” is an excerpt, with a permalink, to the first post on the “JOURNAL” page.
