When I view the showcase web sites that others have produced using wordpress, I think there must be something I’m not understanding because I see cool things like rounded corners, neat graphics with text inside the header, text written and tilted on various places on the page. I see nothing at all that resembles any template on wordpress. Generally, how are these kinds of things created??? Are they created with the basic dashboard tools, plugins, etc, or are these sites created by extensive css and other code modes? I can’t even figure out how to get rid of the constant blog format that each page has. General advice to me is welcome. Thanks.

Pretty much all styling is done using CSS. Some themes do have that kind of “fancy stuff” built-in and some plug-ins may also add certain styles.

To do much of that kind of thing, you’ll really need to learn CSS — this is a good reference site:

There are also tons of tutorials and videos and other resources out there on CSS and WP — google around to find them.

To create a non-blog page, you’ll want to use a “static page” — this explains how to do that:

That site has lots of great information that may be helpful too.
