Should I self-host?

  • What is the downside/updside of self-hosting?

If I use wordpress’s own hosting, do I get ads or something on my pages?

If not, why would I want to host myself — do I have more flexibility? Or is it just a security thing?

    Thanks.

  • I think for anyone asking this question, the answer is a resounding “No.”

A person having the needed technical skill to self-host would be aware of the pros and cons already.

    Enjoy 😉

You would self-host so you could take advantage of ad revenue, or you wanted to install plugins, or you want to use a theme that wordpress.COM doesn’t support, or you want a relatively easy way to run a website, or you want to learn to run your own website.

But that means you also accept the responsibility to keep your site updated, and you do proper backups.
