Should I have a Page Template dropdown?

  • OK – I’m starting afresh on this issue.
    When I go to Write > Page to create a new page – should I have an available templates dropdown? And… if I don’t have one (which I don’t) does anyone know why please? (I’ve been manually entering the template name in the wp_postmeta table which works of course but surely ain’t the right thing to have to do)

  • The “page template” dropdown only appears if the theme you are using contains those templates. If your theme contains those templates, it’s possible that the template file has this at the very top of the file:

    <?php
    /*
    Template Name: Archives
    */
    ?>

    Ah! Interesting. So – if I create ‘special’ templates for page use and out this construct at the very top – this means the dropdown will appear – yes?
    Thanks

    Answered my own question. Yes it does.
    Thanks – you’ve made my day easier!
