I am a newbie and have been poring over the forums and support and cannot figure out why I am unable to change the css on a purchased template (or the default WP theme either).
I am on a Mac using MAMP, WP 2.9.2. I have an active theme, I go to appearance>editor, change the css I want changed (style.css), click "update file", go to "visit site" and find that nothing has changed.
ctrl or cmd f5 doesn't seem to do the trick.

Is it correct that I don't need ftp if I am using localhost?

    Any help is appreciated.

You shouldn't need FTP when using localhost. Have you tried editing the CSS of the default or classic themes? Have you actually examined the stylesheet in your purchased them using a plain text editor?

I have tried both the default and classic. Same result, nothing changes. I have not tried a plain text editor, but I have tried the default and the purchased in Dreamweaver.

I get the feeling this is one of those all you need to do is...
and I am completely missing it.

I don't use MAMP but could it be a permissions issue? Are the file contents actually being changed?

It could be entirely possible that they are not. I am not all that familiar with MAMP either, and wouldn't know how to tell if they are actually being changed. I was able to change an image in the purchased "header.php" file, but all the rest of the action is in the css.

If your changes are still in there the next time you navigate to that file in the Editor, then they're being saved.

Try clearing your browser's cache so it download the newly edited stylesheet and then refresh the page :)
