 * Any chance I could use it with a shortcode or tag or something? I rarely use 
   the web interface for posting, and it’d be useful to define a default value for
   embeds and use the shortcode from the WP mobile app or anything else…

   supports shortcodes and putting a plain-text link on its own line, see: [http://codex.wordpress.org/Embeds](http://codex.wordpress.org/Embeds)
