Support » Plugin: WooCommerce » [NSFW] Shop page shortcode showing other categories

  • Resolved tisenberg

    (@tisenberg)

On my shop page (home page), I have short code to display only one category. This was working fine for a few months and now all of the sudden some other category is showing up in the listing. The first two short code category views are working fine, the third one is not. The fourth one is fine.

    [product_category category=”ammunition” columns=3 per_page=”100″ orderby=”rand”]

The other products are under a different parent category but they all roll up to “All”.

When viewing the products listing tab it shows the correct categories. I picked one of the products that shouldn’t show up, turned off all categories and left it in Uncatagorized, saved it then refreshed the home page, it still shows up even though it is clearly not in the short code category type.

    For example, Say I had
    Dry Goods
    – cereal
    – pasta
    Soups
    – chicken
    -broth

I have a short code showing Dry Goods and it is showing them, but I’m also seeing chicken and broth.

I have tried a few variations of the short code to see if one parm is causing the issue like rand or per_page and removing them doesn’t fix it either.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi there πŸ‘‹

Well, that’s strange. The shortcode looks fine.

Let’s check if there is an error on the WooCommerce Logs. So please, provide us the following:

    • System Status: You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select β€œGet system report” and then β€œCopy for support”. Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.
    • Error log: share a copy of the fatal error log found under WooCommerce > System Status > Logs (if available)

    Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the delay, I had an unrelated outage on the website. No idea. Hoster isn’t sure. I think someone was playing with DNS on their side.

Anyways, as a reminder to this odd thing, not only is it on the website, but when I’m in admin on the product listing and I change the filter to ammunition, firearms show up intermixed. The product listing shows the categories and it is clear that they are not in ammunition. It seems like a corrupted index or something to me as opposed to a theme or store front issue.

There are no fatal errors. Well not true, last night and day before I was playing around with code snippets and caused a few, but everything recovered fine, no issue. I was playing around with Checkout/Cart/Shipping stuff which is unrelated.

    (@gabrielfuentes)

    Apologies for the delay, @tisenberg.

Okay, I see that you mention that those errors that are coming from the Code Snippet plugin are intended and fixed by now, so all good there. And, the system status looks okay to me.

This problem might be caused by a conflict with your theme or with another plugin.
    Β
The best way to determine this is to:

    • Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
    • Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
    • Repeat the action that is causing the problem

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

    Before you start

    1. First, please make sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. Most hosting companies have this included in the subscription, but you could also consider using a service likeΒ Jetpack. If something goes wrong, it’s nice to know that you can restore your site.
    2. Second, I would suggest installing a plugin calledΒ Health Check & Troubleshooting. This is a plugin developed by the WordPress community and it allows you to disable plugins without affecting your current site visitors.

    I hope that helps!

Thanks for the update, I love the idea of the troubleshooting mode with health check, but for some reason the toubleshooting button is not working. It says it can’t copy some file… sorry, I copied the message but lost it and I’ve deactived it to start over and try again. I’ll provide the actual message later. I swear it was about copying a file and plugin.

Under Woo, Status, Logs… I’m not seeing any entries in a log file with any errors.

I downloaded StoreFront and Whoops, I accidently activated StoreFront live on the site… since it was there I did a quick check and firearms were still mixed with ammunition. I put TopStore back.

I’ll review plugins I’ve installed recently and see which I can easily disable to see if those fix the problem. Any tips on why the Health Check troubleshooting mode wouldn’t activate, here is the actual error message when I have TopStore and StoreFront as my theme: We were unable to copy the plugin file required to enable the Troubleshooting Mode.

    Hi @tisenberg πŸ‘‹

With is an accident, we can see that the theme is not causing the issue. So it might be a conflict with another plugin.

Regarding the Health and Troubleshooting issue, it might seem that a conflict with another plugin is not allowing it to work properly.

Another suggestion would be that you ask your host to set up a staging environment of your site so that you can perform the testing there. πŸ™‚

Please perform the full conflict test and then let me know how it goes!

    Cheers!

I put the site into a maintenance mode early this morning and walked down nearly every plug in and disabled and tested. My test was on the main homepage of my site and in the Woo admin section under products. I set a filter to Ammunition and it still showed every firearm intermixed in the products/administration listing. I also browsed the shop page on the site and they were intermixed there too.

I unrelated one specific firearm from that category and only had it in Uncategorized, it still showed up under ammunition. I added an extra ‘s’ to firearms parent category to try and nudge the category, while it did create a new parent category of firearmss, they still showed up under ammunition.

I duplicated a firearm in order to create a new one last night, it now shows up under the firearm category, but also in ammunition.

As a test this morning I created a random brand new test firearm and only put it under that category… it also shows up under ammunition.

    Hey again!

    Let’s test one thing:

Can you set the category shortcode to use the category ID instead of the name?

Let us know if that works.

I wasn’t sure how to do it by id instead of name, but it caused me to rethink it and I did an opposite (not in) and it worked.

    [product_category category=”Firearms, Accessories, Sights” columns=”3″ per_page=”100″ orderby=”rand” cat_operator=”NOT IN”]

Now, while it worked, there clearly is still something happening under the covers because when I’m in the administration of the site and click on Products, set a filter for Ammunition (in stock, out of stock, etc) it still shows firearms intermixed. It just clicked in my brain today, in the admin/products listing, it is not showing other categories in this list (e.g. Misc, Sights, Accessories) which is good, but still odd that it randomly selected the parent category of Firearms only. It’s just odd.

I’m in a better situation now that the customer side of the website is showing the right category, but I’d still like to get this resolved.

I created a staging website and disabled every plugin except WooCommerce and I am still seeing firearms being mixed with Ammunition. I am seeing it on the client webpage side as well as under Admin/Products with Category filter of Ammunition.

No idea, this still seems like a corrupted index to me. When in the Admin/Product listing filtered view, the firearms are shown intermixed but the firearms do not list the Ammunition category. Very odd.

Very odd indeed! That’s a frustrating thing to have to happen! If you want, this would be a good thing to post to the WooCommerce GitHub page:

    https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/issues

Doing that will bring it straight to the attention of the core developers, and they can address your issue directly.

I hope that helps. Have a wonderful day ahead! πŸ™‚

Creating a brand new “Test” category, moving the sub category products over to it, then deleting the firearms category, then renaming Test to Firearms fixed everything. (or so I think so at this point).

Again, just my opinion, I had changed to a default theme, turned off every plug in and short codes and admin/woo/products (filtered to one product) both were intermixing categories. This leads me to believe database/table/index corruption or bad link between tables, or something.

    Consider this resolved.
