Sharing links share webpage only
-
Hi,
the sharing links share the whole webpage instead of the image. (At least with Facebook and Twitter) Is this normal?
Thx!

Yes, this is normal. Also see https://photoswipe.com/
Ok, thank You.
Is there maybe a workaround to link (share) the individual images?- This reply was modified 5 years, 1 month ago by dso1.
No, there is no workaround since at least Facebook does not allow to share image URLs (and I think this is also true for Twitter).
Example:
Image within the webpage:
https://wordpress-demo.arnowelzel.de/lightbox-with-photoswipe/#&gid=1&pid=4This is the single image:
https://wordpress-demo.arnowelzel.de/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Berlin-2017-05-07-8.jpgAnd this would be the URL to share it on Facebook – which does not work:
https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress-demo.arnowelzel.de%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2019%2F01%2FBerlin-2017-05-07-8.jpgHowever, when sharing the webpage, it works:
https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress-demo.arnowelzel.de%2F%23%26gid%3D1%26pid%3D4Thank You for the examples!
For me both work: the first one displays the picture in my news feed (and clicking it will transfer me to the photo), while the second one displays only the front page of the website – without any specific content -, but transfers to the image in the gallery.
IMHO the first one looks better as you can see the content (picture).
the first one’s facebook sharing style:
the second one’s style:
So is it possible to use the first one method?
What exact URLs did you use?
Hi Arno,
those You posted before:
1.
And this would be the URL to share it on Facebook – which does not work:
https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress-demo.arnowelzel.de%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2019%2F01%2FBerlin-2017-05-07-8.jpg2.
However, when sharing the webpage, it works:
https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress-demo.arnowelzel.de%2F%23%26gid%3D1%26pid%3D4Thx!
Thank you. When I first tried the direct URL to the image it did not work on Facebook – Facebook refused to accept the image link. That’s why I assumed this is the reason why Photoswipe uses another URL for Facebook and Twitter.
However, it works now – I don’t know why. So I’ll change the URLs used in the sharing links with the next update.
Hi Arno,
i found this plugin: Thumb Fixer for Facebook in this article, and some useful information on their support page:
– accordingly Facebook uses a 24hrs “snapshot” of a site, so that’s why we can’t see changes immediately (can be shortened with facebook debugger, more explanation here)
– this and this info could be also useful. So if You implement those Open Graph values, it may be useful to add a “turn them off”-option to avoid duplicates if someone uses that Thumb Fixer plugin. (the plugin Social Pug has this option called “Disable Open Graph Meta Tags“)
Have a nice day and thank You for your great plugin! 🙂
Version 1.95 now uses the image URL itself for Facebook and Twitter. Pinterest already got the image URL along with a description based on the caption (if there is any).
I don’t have any of these Open Graph values on my site and the Lightbox plugin does not provide them either. So this should not be a problem.
Well – I turned out, that some people liked to have the sharing as it was before.
Therefore I will make this customizable with the next update (probably with release 1.98). Please be aware, that you then have to configure the sharing in the backend and choose if you want to share only the image or the whole page.
