I have a question regarding the functionality of this plugin.

If I share my posts URL on Facebook, and then people comment on Facebook – will the comments show up on my website? That is – does the app follow each posts URL and link that to the Facebook App ID when deciding what comments to show?

OR – Does the post/page need to be shared by one of the on-page Facebook buttons in order to connect the comments.

Or have I missed how this plugin is supposed to work?

95% of comments on my posts will come from sharing that post to facebook – not by facebook users randomly browsing my site – so finding out how this works is important. Many thanks!

FB comments are connected by URL/permalink. A post on Facebook itself has it’s own permalink and even though it’s a share of an external URL, that post creates a new FB permalink (this counts for both personal profiles and business pages). FB comments when powered within WP connect via the WP permalink and therefore have different properties.

Bonus elaboration: No, it’s not possible to connect/merge the two URLs. The only connection that can be made is, when using FB Comments in the WP install, the tickbox is ticked to post to Facebook which it does, but that in itself creates a FB permalink to which other people can comment on that.

i guess that’s fair enough – facebook users wouldn’t really want their comments showing up on other websites without their permission, but still.

i’ll give it a go next time I need to share or comment on something, and see how it looks! thanks.
