  • Hello folks,

I am interested in this matter. Do you plan to add SFTP support to plugin upgrade? Because I cannot update my plugins in this way right now.

    Thanks.

I had the same problem: in your PHP config you need to install the SSH2 extension.

See http://felipecruz.com/blog_using-ssh2-and-php.php for an example. You may have to compile the extension. On my install it was a straight pecl command but your mileage may vary.

Once the ssh2 extension is installed, use phpinfo() to confirm it’s there. If it is, then the ssh2 option will become available as a choice in your plugin update.

Or to explain to the non-technical: It’s not that WordPress doesn’t understand SFTP, it’s that PHP (the engine that runs WordPress and many other apps) isn’t set up for it yet.

If you don’t know how to (or can’t) set it up on your server, contact your webhost. They should be able to help.

There also seems to be some fairly straight forward “how to” instructions in /includes/class-wp-filesystem-ssh2.php.
