 * i remember reading something about there being a conflict with fancyzoom or something
   or other. Maybe that is it?

   plugins. There might be a conflict with one of your current plugins. I have tested
   this new version on my test site and it works nicely. I love the new layout ;).

 * There is no conflict with plugins – I am not daft, I have tried that by switching
   off other plugins.

 * same here. Running WP 3.4.2; backup was workignq quite well, but after recent
   update, totally disappeared: no job on top bar, in plugin list I can see Only
   enable and modify but no access anymore to configuration.
