I have probably tried 50% of those plugins (the ones I could download) with no success. I am at a loss at trying to explain what I want to do, so let me try again.

I want the general site open to the public, where students can come in without logging in, read posts, download materials, and maybe learn something.

If they want to add a post or get something that is available for members/paid members, they now need to login.

In saying that, I need to make a Category for Members free and one for members paid for this to happen?

I guess what I am really after is a “how to” on designing the layout and not really the plugin itself.

Thanks for the link, it was very useful.

You have to chose some plugin from all of them and watch a tutorial or read the documentation if you need help to build that.
It looks like you need just basic function what probably all membership plugins do.
If I have to choose one plugin I will go with Memberpress
Anyway for basic, you can use some free plugin too.

So shorted you have to create at least two member’s group – one – FREE and another – PAID. Then you have to restrict content – page/posts whatever … for particulars groups.
    That’s almost all 🙂
If you can not decide which plugin to use, choose the simplest one if has enough features for your needs. Don’t forget to check available payment method for that plugins and all what you will need.

    Hello Raymond

You can use the free WooCommerce plugin to handle the payment side. Then the Groups plugin is simple to use and also free. It will just require a little manual work from you to assign a new sign up to the group that has access to restricted content. Creating access restrictions for a page is super simple in the Groups plugin.

If you want this all to be automated, then you might consider purchasing http://www.woothemes.com/products/groups-woocommerce/ which allows the completion of an sign up order to automatically add a new member to a group.

Hope this helps get you started 🙂

using Membership plugin its easy to get it done. Even you can use Woocommerce too, because they have Learning management plugin and Membership too.

There are some other plugin also can check to get it done which are:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/s2member/
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/rs-members/
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-membership/
    http://thememoz.com/product/moz-membership/

I already used above and they are pretty cool. Some other plugin you may use too which are built only for teaching membership site:

    http://www.learndash.com/
    https://flyplugins.com/wp-courseware/

I hope you will get your perfect match from above.

I really appreciate all the comments and they are all truly helpful. This is what my homepage looks like at the moment.

From what I have been told so far, it seems best to have anyone wanting to post or download anything register as a member / paid member for lessons and tutoring. If you notice in the top nav bar, there is a login tab and register tab. Would I have to direct the plugin only to the register tab and a different plugin for logging in?

As well, any content that I wish to sell would be done using the ecommerce plugin? From what I am reading, I would probably need 3 plugins? I have already looked over the ecommerce and figured out how to set up a paid download. Its the members area that still gives me a bit of confusion.

    Again, thanks for the help.
